About Nutricia North America
Nutricia North America is a clinical nutrition company that specializes in medical foods and infant formulas for the dietary management of rare allergic, gastrointestinal, genetic and metabolic disorders. Nutricia North America is part of Nutricia Advanced Medical Nutrition and Danone Medical Nutrition, global leaders in infant and medical nutrition.
Nutricia was the first to create amino acid-based, hypoallergenic formulas for the dietary management of cow milk allergy and other related gastrointestinal conditions. Nutricia’s Neocate® product line — including Neocate Infant, Neocate Junior, Neocate One+ and E028 Splash — was developed more than 15 years ago for infants and children with gastrointestinal disorders. Rapid relief for countless families and nearly 50 clinical studies primarily focusing on safety and efficacy prove these products effective for the management of these conditions.
In addition to Neocate, Nutricia produces metabolics products and products to help children with intractable epilepsy. The company also manufactures and sells a select number of products which meet the needs of very small groups of people facing life-threatening diseases. For example, the company manufactures Lorenzo’s Oil, the treatment for a rare neurological disease called adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD) that was featured in the 1992 movie Lorenzo’s Oil with Susan Sarandon and Nick Nolte.
Nutrition and Autism
Medical research has shown that 46 to 85 percent of children with an autism spectrum disorder suffer from gastrointestinal symptoms such as chronic constipation or diarrhea.1,2 Research has also shown that gastrointestinal problems are more prevalent in children with ASD than children without developmental disabilities.3
Healthcare providers and parents of children with autism have recently found that Nutricia’s hypoallergenic, nutritionally complete, gluten-free and casein-free (GFCF) medical foods provide valuable nutrition for children following the GFCF diet or other special diets for children with autism spectrum disorder.
In 2008, Nutricia North America partnered with Autism Speaks, the nation’s leading non-profit organization dedicated to autism awareness in an effort to raise awareness of the need for properly treating gastrointestinal symptoms in children with autism. Since then, Nutricia has been educating parents and clinicians on the role of nutrition intervention and the use of its formulas in children with autism spectrum disorder. Nutricia also supports multiple organizations dedicated to improving the lives of those with autism.
Today, Nutricia North America continues to pursue clinical research into gluten-free, casein-free (GFCF) diets and autism to gain a better understanding of the role of nutrition in management of children with autism.
