Flexible Spending Accounts

A Flexible Spending Account is a benefit offered by some employers that allows you to direct a portion of your pay into a tax-free account to be used throughout the year for out-of-pocket expenses. This includes certain Healthcare expenses that are not covered by your insurance plan. The range of coverage depends on the employer and while some have a narrow scope of expenses they will cover, others will cover anything remotely considered medical. Certain plans will reimburse you for medical foods if they are submitted with evidence of medical necessity. Your doctor can write a note describing your child’s medical condition and necessity for medical foods.

Tax Deductions

Check with your tax advisor to determine if your child’s medical food is eligible to be claimed as a medical expense. Usually, the cost difference between a prescribed specialized food and the alternative food is eligible for deduction. For example, the cost difference between a specialized formula like Neocate Junior or E028 Splash and a milk-based, nutritionally complete formula could be calculated and deducted as medical expenses. In addition, some parents are able to deduct shipping or driving costs spent to attain the specialized food which cannot be purchased locally. WIC (Women, Infants and Children)

Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children, more commonly known as WIC, is a national program providing nutrition services to low income women, infants and children. States receive Federal grants to provide nutrition education, supplemental foods and Healthcare referrals to qualifying families.
